What is a facelift, and what does it entail?
Dr. Lisa Hunsicker describes a facelift, or rhytidectomy, as a procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. The goal of the facelift is to create a more youthful appearance by tightening underlying muscles and repositioning fatty tissues and skin.
There are different types of facelifts, including:
- Mini facelift – A mini facelift is ideal for patients with localized areas of concern, such as the jowls or nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth). This type of facelift involves shorter incisions and can be performed in about two hours.
- Full facelift – A complete facelift addresses concerns in the lower two-thirds of the face and the neck. This type of facelift requires incisions that begin above the hairline at the temples, continue around the ear and finish in the lower scalp. A full facelift can take four to five hours to complete.
Facelift procedure expectations
A facelift is performed as an outpatient procedure, which means you will go home on the same day as your surgery. The length of your surgery depends on the type of facelift you are having.
During a mini facelift, Dr. Lisa Hunsicker will make small incisions in front of and behind your ears. Through these incisions, she will access the underlying muscles and tissue, which she will then tighten. She will also remove any excess skin.
For a full facelift, Dr. Lisa Hunsicker will make incisions in front of your ears, along your hairline, and behind your ears. Through these incisions, she will access the underlying muscles and tissue, which she will then tighten. She will also remove any excess skin. In some cases, a complete facelift may also require liposuction to remove fatty deposits from the neck and chin area.
