Your reconstruction journey begins with a 90-minute consultation with Dr. Hunsicker.

During this visit, she will review your medical history, discuss your goals, and explain the surgical process. Dr. Hunsicker may order bloodwork to prepare for a safe and successful procedure. If breast cancer reconstruction in Denver, CO, is the next best step for you, we’ll schedule your pre-op appointment and surgery date.

Pre-Op

2 weeks before surgery, you’ll attend a preoperative visit where Dr. Hunsicker will finalize your surgical plan, review your health, answer any questions, and have you sign consent forms.

You will receive a surgical package including a green smoothie recipe, protein drinks, probiotics, scar cream, and Hibiclens surgical scrub to support your healing process.

Surgery & Follow-Up

Please arrive 2 hours early on surgery day to complete check-in.

After the procedure, we will prescribe medications and antibiotics to aid your recovery. Dr. Hunsicker will schedule a next-day follow-up to monitor your healing and address any concerns. Additional follow-up visits are scheduled at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year to support your recovery.

Pre & Post-Care Guidelines

Pre-Care Instructions

Nutrition

We offer a green smoothie recipe and protein drinks to help nourish your body before surgery. Proper nutrition plays a key role in supporting a smooth and successful recovery.

Medications

We provide probiotics and post-surgical medications to aid comfort and reduce complication risks. Always consult your primary care provider before starting any new medications or supplements.

At-Home Preparation

It is important to create a safe, comfortable recovery space at home. Use pillows to keep your chest elevated and minimize strain. Follow your doctor’s advice on taking time off work and limiting straining activities to promote healing.

Post-Care Instructions

Post-Surgery

Arrange transportation for your surgery day and the following day’s follow-up appointment. The numbing medication we use may last up to 3 days. Contact Dr. Hunsicker immediately if you notice bleeding, nausea, or vomiting.

What to Avoid

Avoid lifting, pushing, or pulling anything heavier than 10 lbs for at least 6 weeks, as this can strain your incisions. Refrain from raising your arms overhead, sleeping on your stomach or sides, and engaging in strenuous physical activity during recovery.

Healing

Recovery takes time. Attend all scheduled post-op visits. Initial bruising, swelling, and elevated breast positioning are normal. Your breasts will settle into their natural, final shape as swelling subsides.
