FAQ
What techniques do you use for scar revision?
Based on the type of scar we’re treating, Dr. Hunsicker may perform one of the following:
Excision: In a fusiform excision surgery, the doctor will make an elliptical incision around the scar and remove the tissue. In a partial or serial excision surgery, the doctor will make an elliptical incision, but may not be able to remove the scar in one procedure. You may need a series of follow-up appointments.
Local flap: Dr. Hunsicker performs local flap surgery when the surrounding skin can cover the scarred area. Using a Z- or W-shaped incision, she can break up the scar, restore function, and limit its visibility.
Grafts: With a skin graft, we can repair small, round, and depressed scars. During this surgery, Dr. Hunsicker will take skin from a donor site on your body and use it to level the scarred area with the surrounding tissue. For some of these procedures, such as local flap surgery, the doctor may perform tissue expansion techniques, which help the skin stretch adequately to make reconstruction possible.
Can surgery completely remove my scar?
Though scar revision does not technically remove a scar, it effectively replaces one unsightly scar with another that has an improved aesthetic appearance. It is impossible to fully restore the skin to its appearance before scar formation. Still, the procedure can have a positive cosmetic and emotional impact on the patient.
What can I expect after my surgery?
Following scar revision, your skin may feel tight, and you may experience swelling and pain, which can be managed with medication. We’ll cover the surgery site with a dressing, which you may need to change regularly to keep it fresh.
